_Poem for Stef_

				crabwise, landwise
				listing in the sea
				sandwise, scabwise
				he will come to me
				o,
				he will come to me

devil by the
deep blue sea
he's afraid of the water
he's afraid of me

		Trembling by the water
		he pauses, he shakes
		he sees me waiting
		in the waves
		I smile I beckon
He leaves the safety of the shore
		He comes
		with smiling eyes
		and an uncertain mouth

				skylla and charybdis
				crashing by the sea
				skylla and charybdis
				drag him down with me
				o,
				drag him down with me

devil in the
deep blue sea
he's afraid of the water
but he wades in after me

		The water breaks at his
		chest and
		his hair spreads
		like a fan--
		salty lips and lashes,
		weed-green eyes implore
		so,
I wind my fingers in his locks
		and pull him under,
		hold him
		in a wavy embrace

				sandy surf, salty earth
				drinking in the sea
				crusty turf, watery birth
				take him up with me
				o,
				take him up with me

devil in the
deep blue sea
he's afraid of the water
but I hold him close to me

		In the world of waves
		and water
		he fights me, he struggles
		to be free
		Panic rolls his eyes back
		and he surrenders
		his breath
		to me--
		And I suck it in
		tenderly hauling him up
		We surface,
		he cries,
		his baptism complete

				crabwise, landwise
				floating on the sea
				sandwise, scabwise
				he has come to me
				yes,
				he has come to me

devil,
my sweet devil,
by the
deep
blue
sea

are you still afraid of the water?

are you still afraid of me?
